Master's Degree Programme in Global and Transnational Sociology 2017 - 2019

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the programme, students will be able to:
- comprehend what globalization is from multiple disciplinary perspectives
- understand a range of theoretical approaches to understand global and transnational processes
- confidently analyze global social change
- investigate transnational elements of local policies and cultural trends
- discuss relevant current literature, approach new scholarship, and critically present in public
- design, conduct and report academic research of the highest quality independently and in teams
- recognize, value and work with cultural diversity
- apply this knowledge in working life


The Programme aims to provide students with the basis for critically analyzing globalization and transnational connections in the contemporary world. Covering a range of theoretical training, and focusing on recent neo-institutionalist approaches, the Programme will afford students a toolkit to analyze social, political and cultural forces shaping our global world. Students will learn perspectives on understanding the contemporary world, will appreciate how national policies are made, will unpack the transnational connectivity in contemporary media, and will see into the transnational relations of civil society, culture and modern religion. The degree will also offer students a cosmopolitan and multi-cultural perspective crucial for many careers.

Master's Degree Programme in Global and Transnational Sociology 2017 - 2019

General studies 10 ECTS
KKENMP3 Scientific Writing, 5 ECTS
Language studies 3 ECTS
Language studies in the Master's degree programme are different depending on the student's educational background. Elementary Finnish course is strongly recommended for students who have not studied Finnish before. Students who have completed basic school education in Finnish can take other language studies from the Language Centre.
Studies on Global Society 30 ECTS
Free Choice Studies 10 ECTS
In order to complete this section, students can select GTS6, GTS7, other courses with UTA and/or studies completed during a study exchange period. These studies must be agreed with the academic coordinator of the programme.
