Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student can:
-Describe the mechanism and machinery involved in the expression of eukaryotic genes
-Analyze the differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic/viral gene expression regulation
-Apply advanced molecular biology knowledge in specific questions

General description

General objective is to gain knowledge at a molecular level from the genes to the active proteins or RNA molecules, in other words from genetic information to biological functions in prokaryotic cells and in some viruses with special emphasis in eukaryotic cells and species.

Written assays, oral exam.

Study materials

Course slides, scientific literature and the book Jocelyn E. Krebs, Elliott S. Goldstein and Stephen T. Kilpatrick, Lewin's GENES XI (2013 or 2014). The examinable textbook material is from Lewin's GENES XI as summarized below. Although it is mostly about eukaryotic gene expression, many of its aspects can only be properly understood by reference to the relevant processes in bacteria or viruses. Examinable material: Lewin's GENES XI chapters 19-30.
