General description

The course aims to provide the student with the competencies to write a well-structured and stylistically appropriate research article in English with a view to eventual publication.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to
• use various cohesive devices to improve the flow of their text
• know and employ a formal academic style (grammar and vocabulary)
• express their own voice in their writing
• identify the structure, moves and linguistic features of a research article
• write a data commentary and/or a literature review
• construct a research paper on a topic in their area of study


The course will cover the typical structure and linguistic features of research articles, patterns in Anglo-Saxon academic discourse, positioning oneself as a writer/researcher, and improving textual flow and style.

Teaching methods

The average student workload for a 2 credit course is 54 hours (2 x 27). The distribution of hours between classwork, tutorials, online work and other independent work will vary.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Satisfactory completion of tasks, including an article written on research in the students’ own field (specific criteria given with task), attendance and active participation, other criteria will be given by the teacher.
