General description

The course is based on papers published in the premier conference in the field of Interactive Technology, Human Factors in Computing Systems (the CHI conference). Each student will choose two papers from the previous year’s conference and present them in class in the same manner as papers are presented in the actual conference. Each student will also serve as session chair.

Learning outcomes

After this course the student has a view of state-of-the-art research in interactive technology: what kind of topics are studied and which methods are used. Students know how research results are presented both in writing and to a live audience.

The first lecture is an introduction to how conferences operate and to the topics that can be chosen for student presentations. The remaining meetings each consist of one conference session with two presentations, 30 minutes each (20 minute presentation and 10 minutes for discussion), and a post analysis of the session (joint discussion, 30 minutes).

Further information on prerequisites and recommendations

The course is given for the first time in 2011. The introductory lecture (not compulsory) will be given and selection of conference papers will be done during Period III. Participation is limited to 14 students. If needed, student selection will be based on amount and grades of past studies.
