General description

Global environmental problems such as climate change, scarcity of critical resources and biodiversity loss threaten humanity with serious risks. The course presents a comprehensive overview of the political aspects and solutions of energy and environmental security. Political, economic and social threats are addressed from both global and local perspectives.

Learning outcomes

The objective of the course is to provide the students with a firm grasp of the central issues of environmental security, both from a) the point of view of environmental developments - such as environmental degradation (floods, deforestation, desertification and climate change) – for societies, national states and transnational and geopolitical dimensions and from b) the perspectives of human activities and economic growth including the use of natural resources & the use of energy and the threats of political activities, such as conflicts and wars, to the environment. The course familiarizes the students to the attempts to solve the risks of environmental security.

The course introduces the concepts of environmental risks and environmental security and shows its application in different human social, economic and political activities and situations. The course provides to the students a broad overview of global, national and local attempts to solve and adapt environmental changes.
