General description

Academic discourse and practice has been informed by discourse analysis, narratology and numerous other approaches. This interdisciplinary course examines several of these approaches in various disciplines in order to get a fuller understanding of the role of discourse in academic texts and research.
The readings dealt with in the course will be reviewed and the contents of the articles discussed paying particular attention to the actual discourse of academic articles. Students will select a particular methodology/ approach/theory and apply it to their area of specialization.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, students are expected to be able to
- develop a deeper understanding of the role of English in academic texts
- learn to identify the distinctiveness of academic English
- apply the knowledge acquired in the course to written assignments and whereby engage with the conventions of academic writing in their discipline


To achieve the learning outcomes, students will
- review some of the predominant trends in current academic texts and lectures
- study and engage in the overall cultural/historical/disciplinary approaches to oral and written presentation in academia
- present one’s research in an oral and written form
- evaluate colleagues’ projects and presentations
