General description

Common course for all programmes in MA in Education.
Kaikille opintosuunnille yhteinen opintojakso.
On demand Finnish students can finalize their assignments in Finnish / Tarvittaessa suomalaiset opiskelijat voivat viimeistellä kirjalliset suoritukset suomen kielellä.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student will
- be aware of major debates about education and schooling in different historical and cultural contexts, related to transforming struggles about economical, political and environmental hegemony
- be able to engage in idea-historical discussion and pedagogical argumentation about different meanings and functions of education


Lectures (also foreign scholars) and group work on transformation of discourses and debates on education in different contexts; selection of Finnish and international book chapters and journal articles; reflections on cross-cultural cases related to students´ research orientation.

Study materials

Selection of Finnish and other monographs on conceptual and political history of different forms of education, Finnish and international journals, material produced by collaborating experts.
