Learning outcomes

The module provides students with a basic understanding of the role of methodology in research and introduces the range of research methods from ethnography to network analysis. The students learn about the epistemological and ontological dimensions of research and the relations between theories, methods and research materials. They identify methodological differences of various research traditions as well as different interest of knowledge that guide the research.

The first part of the course consists of lectures and literature on methodology. During the second part of the course, the students will be divided in research groups to learn to apply different methods together. The students will identify research methods most suitable for their own thesis. By working as a research group the students learn to solve practical research problems from data gathering to research ethics. The outcomes of the research groups will be introduced in a final seminar.
